The legal representatives of attorney Odila Castillo Bonilla released a strong declaration on October 1st, unequivocally denying the claims that have been circulated by several newspapers in Panama.
The defense described these articles as harmful assaults fueled by personal financial motives, aimed at tarnishing Castillo’s professional standing and personal honor.
Castillo’s defense contends absence of basis and infringement of rights
Carlos Carrillo, part of Castillo’s legal team, asserted that the allegations lack basis and are designed to hinder the professional paths of the young attorney and her associate. He highlighted that hidden financial motives are driving these assaults, looking to gain from the tarnishing of Castillo’s reputation.
The defense highlighted that this is not the initial occurrence of media harassment faced by the attorney. They referred to an analogous event in 2021, when a Panamanian outlet disseminated false information concerning an alleged arrest of Castillo, which was later retracted.
Partial truths and violation of confidentiality
According to the legal team, both the current allegations and those from 2021 are founded on “half-truths,” manipulated to undermine the professional practice of attorney Odila Castillo. Furthermore, they asserted that the disclosed information contravenes the principles of confidentiality, as part of the investigation originates from a previously concluded family matter.
Private information, such as immigration records and tax filings, was also revealed—data that, as stated by the defense, was acquired through illicit means.
Unlawful monitoring and continuing legal proceedings
The defense revealed that Castillo has been the target of GPS tracking, which represents a blatant breach of her privacy and a type of illegal surveillance. Carrillo claimed that his client’s basic rights, protected by the Panamanian Constitution and relevant laws, have been violated.
He proclaimed that all requisite legal measures will be taken to determine accountability for the harm suffered and the potential harm intended. The legal team is steadfast in its dedication to defending Castillo and ensuring that those behind this defamation campaign are held responsible.
